Five stages of pregnancy you didn't know existed Part 4

Did you know there are more than the typical 3 trimesters of pregnancy?

Here are some fresh insights on what you can expect from conception to the mysterious "4th trimester."

I had no idea there was a “4th trimester” until after I’d had babies of my own!

I personally struggled quite a bit in that 4th trimester because nobody talked about it and there was no preparation for what I would experience in that season.

I hope these thoughts and tips can be a help to you so you are not caught off guard in the same way and your transition through each trimester is more seamless and you feel more prepared for what is ahead!

I’m not only going to share with you what to expect in each, but also a lot of local resources you can use as you plan for your pregnancy, newborn and birth in Indianapolis.

Check out Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 of this series!

Birth: The Main Event

The moment you've been waiting for is finally here: birth! Whether you're planning a natural birth or a C-section, this stage is exciting and emotional!

Labor is definitely called labor for a reason, but man, when my babies arrived it all was forgotten. Being able to finally see and hold my baby for the first time is the most emotional experience I’ve ever had. It’s absolutely amazing!

These are moments you’ll always want to remember (even if things don’t go perfectly according to plan).

Hiring a birth photographer is something I’ve never heard anyone say they regret!  I don’t provide birth photography, but highly recommend Joylilly Photography for this special event.

The 4th Trimester: What No One Tells You

Surprise! Your journey doesn't end with birth. The 4th trimester is the first three months of your baby's life, where both of you are adjusting to the world outside the womb.

Having my babies pre-social media, I never had anyone talk about the reality of post partum depression and all of the ways the hormonal changes effect you as a new momma. It can be a tough time navigating all of these changes. It is really important to make sure you have support! If you choose to hire a doula, this is one way to receive that support.

Again, I recommend reaching out to Indiana Birth and Parenting and plan to invest in a doula!

Imagine having someone to hold your baby for you so that you and your husband can get a few hours of much needed sleep after the exhaustion that comes from labor! Having this kind of help in the very beginning stages of having your newborn can make a huge difference in the trajectory of your healing process and adjusting to your new normal.
