Making Mom Friends: 3 Ways to Connect With Other New Moms in the Indianapolis Area

Becoming a new mom is one of the most beautiful and life-changing experiences—but it can also feel a little isolating at times. Whether you're navigating sleepless nights, feeding schedules, or just craving adult conversation, having a community of other moms who truly “get it” can be a game-changer for your emotional well-being.

As your trusted maternity and newborn photographer, I care deeply about more than just capturing beautiful heirloom portraits. I want you to feel supported in every area of motherhood—physically, mentally, and emotionally. That’s why I’ve put together this guide to help you connect with other moms, and build the village every new mother deserves.

In this post, I'll share my best tips for finding new mom friends here in the Indianapolis area, where you will find connection and encouragement that is so important at this special stage in your story.

Before we get started, let me remind you to give yourself grace as finding new mom friends can feel a little awkward and uncertain, especially if you are an introvert. But even the biggest introvert needs to know she is not alone and needs that connection and community. Countless other new mommas are in the same boat, searching for connections and support as they navigate their new roles. So, embrace the process and know that reaching out to other moms is a positive and empowering step in your parenting journey.

# 1 • LOCAL MOM GROUPS

The easiest way to find new mom friends is through local mom groups! These groups are a fantastic way to meet new mom friends—even if you're an introvert!

Here are some great mom groups where you will find connection and encouragement!

Fit4Mom in Carmel

I can’t say enough good things about this amazing program led by

Debra Sexton!

I have personally been a fly on the wall at Debra’s classes, and the opportunity for new mommas and mommas with littles is absolutely amazing!

Debra makes it easy to participate in her classes by creating an environment that is baby and kid friendly as you work out. This eliminates the need to find childcare. Not only are you encouraged to bring your baby and toddler to class with you, Debra makes the class fun for both you and your child!

She is an amazing leader and she is not only concerned with helping you stay healthy physically, but mentally and emotionally as well.

She provides time at each class for mommas to chat and laugh and connect with one another. During class, she reads to the children and pulls out bubbles and fun activities to make the experience fun and enjoyable for everyone!

Here are a few highlights of the different classes available for expectant and new moms:

FIT4BABY® is a month to month program that includes weekly private group workouts and community support. The workouts will build your mental and physical endurance, strengthen your body, and prepare you for pregnancy, birth, and beyond.

#2 • MEET OTHER MOMS AT CHILD FRIENDLY LOCATIONS

Look up your local library and find out when they have storytime. Many libraries have a baby and toddler story time as well as preschool and elementary.

As the weather gets warmer, check out local playgrounds near you. You will be surprised how many other moms you will find that are just as lonely as you are and need connection!

If you find yourself struggling to make a connection in this kind of situation, here are a few tips that can help you can strike up a conversation that feels natural and enjoyable.

• Keep it casual and friendly. Start with a compliment or a light-hearted comment about something you both can relate to, like your kids' activities or the chaos of motherhood.
For example, you might say, "Your little one is really enjoying the swings! How old are they?" This opens up the conversation without putting too much pressure on the other person. Make sure to listen actively and ask open-ended questions that encourage them to share more about their experiences.

  • If you find common ground, don't be afraid to suggest exchanging contact information or planning a future playdate. You can say something like, "It's been so great chatting with you! Would you like to exchange numbers and maybe get our kids together for a playdate sometime?" Or, “Do you guys usually come here around this day/time? I know our kiddos had so much fun playing together!”

Remember, many moms are also looking for new friends, so don't be too hard on yourself if you feel a little nervous.

Just be yourself, show genuine interest, and let the conversation flow naturally.

#3 • USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO CONNECT WITH OTHER NEW MOMS

Social media can be a fantastic tool for connecting with other new moms outside of your current friend group.

Once you find the right mom groups or online communities that resonate with you, jump in by asking questions, sharing your own experiences, or even offering advice to moms.

One of the great things about leveraging social media for mom friendships is that in addition to finding Indianapolis mom groups, you can find groups based on your specific interests, values, or parenting style.

For example, if you're passionate about eco-friendly living, there are groups dedicated to green parenting where you can connect with like-minded moms. Or, if you're navigating the world of attachment parenting, you can find communities that share your outlook and offer support.

This targeted approach makes it even easier to find moms who share your outlook on life and parenting - you already have something in common!

Remember that building these connections takes time and effort, but it's truly worth it in the end. These connections not only provide a support system during challenging times but also enrich your life in countless ways. One of the challenges of being postpartum is feeling isolated. Studies show that connecting with other moms helps reduce these feelings of isolation.

Be patient with yourself as you embark on this journey. Embrace the process and stay open to new friendships, whether you find them in local mom groups, at child-friendly locations, or through social media.
