What does it look like behind the scenes of a newborn photo session at my studio on the east side of Indianapolis?
There is a lot that goes into the preparation of a new little person coming to have their very first professional photo session!
Before you and your baby arrive, much thought and effort goes into choosing colors and themes. As the parent of a newborn baby, you get to share any preferences you have! Often, mommas want the color scheme and theme to match baby’s nursery. Some mommas have colors they’d prefer that I avoid. All of this is discussed and then I go to work to prepare my studio for your little one!
When you arrive, you will find that all the different set ups planned for your baby are ready to go. Wraps and backdrops are set, posing fabrics are stretched out and ready, and all tiebacks, bonnets, outfits, caps and more are in place and ready for your baby.
Newborn sessions always start with parent shots. Pampering you and helping you to see how beautiful you are is so important! Making sure the beautiful connection you have with this new little blessing is captured in the best way possible is high priority. Often, this is the first time you have been out of the house since you brought your baby home from the hospital. This is the first time you have taken extra care with your hair and makeup. The studio is very warm to ensure baby stays sleepy and comfortable, so it is important that Mommy and Daddy look and feel their best! If parent shots are saved for the middle or the end of the session, the warmth of the studio may cause you to feel tired and sleepy just like your baby. I want to capture you while you are feeling your best and as fresh as possible!
Sometimes, no matter how much effort is made to avoid it, baby poo is inevitable! At this particular session, we had a diaper on this little lady and she pooed so much that as Daddy was holding her, it shot up the back of her diaper and out down his shirt and pants! This always makes for a good laugh!
Once parent shots are finished, you get to sip some water and relax on the couch while the process of posing your baby begins. What we start with depends on how sleepy your baby is. If baby is sleepy and relaxed, we start with posing her in a prop facing forward to beautifully capture the details of her little face framed by her sweet, tiny little arms and fingers.
Usually, we move on to bean bag poses after this, highlighting your baby’s flexibility and using the poses to bring several of her sweet newborn features together that result in images that cause you to wonder if this is what your baby looked like in the womb! It’s also fun to create a bit of art in these fun poses!
We finish with some sweet wrapped up images that show the precious “littleness” of your baby all wrapped up like a little package. After all, this little person is the greatest gift you’ve ever received! How fun to have some images that remind you of this precious little package!
You will find that the safety of your newborn is of utmost importance. Great care is taken to ensure your baby is secure at all times.
Time together in the studio celebrating and beautifully capturing this new life is precious! I love getting to know you better as I serve you and provide timeless treasures for you of this priceless piece of your family’s history!
